Le Comte de Monte-Cristo

Au début du XIXème siècle, à Marseille, Edmond Dantès est victime d'un complot ourdi par 3 individus jaloux de son ascension sociale : le magistrat Henri de Villefort, l'officier Fernand de Mortcerf et l'envieux marin Caderousse le dénoncent comme étant bonapartiste. Edmond Dantès est arrêté et condamné à être incarcéré dans la prison de l'île du Château d'If. Au bout de 17 ans, l'abbé Faria, prisonnier d'une cellule voisine lui apprend qu'un formidable trésor est caché dans l'île de Monte-Cristo. Dantès s'évade et parvient jusqu'à l'île de Monte-Cristo et, devenu immensément riche, fait son apparition dans la grande bourgeoisie parisienne sous le nom de comte de Monte-Cristo. Rien ne l'arrête, désormais, pour assouvir sa froide et implacable vengeance.

Il giovane Edmondo Dantès, al colmo della sua gioia per il brillante avanzamento a capitano del "Faraone" e per il prossimo coronamento del suo sogno d'amore con la bella Mercedes, viene arrestato e condotto in prigione per oscure macchinazioni ordite alle sue spalle da individui senza scrupoli. Al giovane capitano non viene neppure permesso di provare la sua innocenza ed egli rimane a marcire in carcere per lunghissimi anni. In prigione Edmondo fa la conoscenza dell'abate Faria, un vecchio saggio detenuto per motivi politici, il quale - vicino alla morte - gli rende possibile l'evasione mediante un ardito stratagemma. Seguendo le istruzioni del vecchio, Dantès si reca nell'isola di Montecristo, dove rintraccia un favoloso tesoro nascosto. Libero e ricco, Dantès rientra nella vita civile sotto mentite spoglie e fa giustizia dei torti patiti.

Edmund Dantes is falsely accused by those jealous of his good fortune, and is sentenced to spend the rest of his life in the notorious island prison, Chateau d'If. While imprisoned, he meets the Abbe Faria, a fellow prisoner whom everyone believes to be mad. The Abbe tells Edmund of a fantastic treasure hidden away on a tiny island, that only he knows the location of. After many years in prison, the old Abbe dies, and Edmund escapes disguised as the dead body. Now free, Edmund must find the treasure the Abbe told him of, so he can use the new-found wealth to exact revenge on those who have wronged him.
