Garfagnana, Italia, 1347. El apuesto sirviente Masseto, huyendo de su vengativo amo, se refugia en un convento donde tres jóvenes monjas, la hermana Alessandra, la hermana Ginevra y la hermana Fernanda, intentan sin éxito averiguar cuál es su propósito en la vida, un enigma al que cada una de ellas se enfrenta de forma diferente.
