All'inizio del Novecento la nobile e casta Eugenia e l'arricchito plebeo Raimondo, siciliani, apprendono per telegramma la notte delle nozze di avere lo stesso padre, ma per convenienze sociali e ragioni economiche decidono di recitare la commedia davanti al mondo, vivendo in casto connubio. Secondo la morale corrente, lui può permettersi qualche scappatella, mentre la virginea consorte, pur smaniosa di penetrare i misteri della carne, deve frenarsi.
